Protect America’s Wireless Statement on Report of CFIUS Approval of T-Mobile-Sprint Merger

Washington D.C. – Today, following the report of CFIUS approving the proposed T-Mobile/Sprint merger, Protect America’s Wireless released the following statement:

“Today’s CFIUS decision raises as many questions as it answers, and T-Mobile and Sprint remain unwilling to answer those questions. This proposed merger requires a robust debate about our national security and foreign policy interests. The American people deserve a seat at the table for that debate. In a global economy and a dangerous world, a merger that purports to be America’s pathway to 5G requires intense scrutiny, especially when it relies on so much foreign investment.

“Our national security requires that Deutsche Telekom and SoftBank abandon the use of Huawei and ZTE equipment, not just in the United States but around the world. Any international company that wants access to American consumers should have a duty not to abet the stealing of our national security secrets and our intellectual property.

“We remain hopeful that CFIUS has required tough conditions on Deutsche Telekom/T-Mobile and Sprint/Softbank. We cannot allow Huawei and ZTE to win the race to 5G and control America’s digital future. The FCC and Congress must continue to thoroughly investigate this merger.”
